My son’s perspective on having a dream

I find it so refreshing when I hear stories of people who have listened to their inner guidance, curious about their future, following their passions, and pursing their dreams. These are our future thought leaders, the movers and shakers, that take a leap of faith, regardless of what the outcome will be. They know it’s way better than living a mediocre life. They are willing to break down the walls that society places on them, to succeed.

So, when my son, Billy, came to me and shared his new business venture, that is outside of his day job, I was curious about his why.

I am using his own words: I am setting up this business because I am trying to fulfill a dream of mine which is being my own boss and owning my own business. I have a lot of skills in a lot of areas that I don’t get to use in my day job. This entrepreneurial venture has allowed me to use my diverse skillset, which I enjoy. I’ve been learning a lot of new skills along the way, from international business to marketing. All and all its been very exciting.

This made me think of one of my favorite quotes…

“That sounds exciting to me.” I said. Then my next question was “What sets you apart from other companies who are marketing this product?” I wanted to know the details that drove his creativity, and making a product that he could be proud of.

This was his answer: “What sets me apart from others who may be offering a similar product is my realistic approach to a “fashion” product. I made the blankets longer and wider than the originals. The reason I did this is because not everyone is petite and not everyone has a models body. This way whether you’re a size 0 or a size 12, you will still be able to enjoy the blankets. Having the blankets smaller may be “sexier “and easier to market, but the blankets are meant to be used in the comfort of your own home. I will be closely monitoring customer feedback on the blankets and will tailor them around what the people want.”

I’m sure this will be the first of many ventures for Billy. He is learning, growing and having fun. He’s getting a taste of fulfilling a dream as an entrepreneur. There is no bigger thrill than being your own boss. Learning and failing go hand in hand. We get to uncover more about our abilities, and what we want vs. what we don’t want. That’s worth the fight. You can believe that the best is yet to come.
